YOU SAID:
A source of mystery, a source of legend, and a source of life, for five thousand years, the Nile River has been one of the most significant geographical entities in history. The Nile is one of the longest rivers in the world, flowing through Egypt and providing life to every living creature in its proximity. Ancient Egyptians saw the potential and took great advantage of the many uses of this river. How did the Nile influence the people of Ancient Egypt? This river caused many advances in trading, transportation, diet, and calendars. The Nile River influenced Ancient Egyptian trading by making transportation easier. Stretching about eight hundred miles, the Nile River was a very practical form of transportation. With the currents of the Nile flowing north and the wind blowing south, it was relatively simple to travel in either direction. Tradesmen could easily sail to other civilizations if they desired to initiate trade relations. Egyptians used the Nile to travel and trade for thousands of years. The Nile River determined Ancient Egyptian diet by providing a source of water for irrigation and a fishing spot. Farmers in Ancient Egypt relied on the Nile to hydrate their crops. To increase productivity, Farmers would build irrigation channels that would assist in watering crops and draining flood waters. The farmers knew the Nile would flood each year so maintaining these irrigation channels was critical to their livelihood. Fishermen also relied on the river as a spot for fishing. The Nile provided the citizens with plentiful meat. Whether it was for fishing or for farming, the Ancient Egyptians depended on the Nile for their sources of food. The Nile River caused the Ancient Egyptians to create a calendar based on the river's flood cycle. They constructed a calendar that consisted of three seasons. One season was named Akhet, which took place from mid-June to mid-October. During Akhet, fields in the Nile flood path were covered in water and fertilized by a new batch of silt. As this took place, farmers would work off their public-labor tax, carrying out jobs like canal repair or quarrying. Another season was given the name Peret, which took place from mid-October to mid-February. In this season, waters receded, but the Nile was still high enough to fill irrigation channels. The farmers would plant and tend their crops in this season. Shemu was the third season, and it took place from mid-February to mid-June. In this season, the farmers harvested their crops and delivered them to markets. The flood cycle controlled when and where the farmers worked and was the reason that they established this calendar. The Nile River advanced the Ancient Egyptians' ways of trading, travelling, eating, and working. It is truly a life sustaining element significant to the development of civilization in this part of the world. It's no wonder that the Nile has been such a source of mystery and legend for Egyptians and the rest of the world throughout history.
