In recent times, immigration from Asia, Africa and Central and South America has extended Minnesota’s diversity. The word Minnesota comes from the Dakota word Sky-tinted water or Mní sóta. Native Americans showed early European settlers the name by dropping milk into water and calling it mnisota. Numerous places in Minnesota have similar names, Minneota, Minnetonka, Minnehaha Falls, Minneiska and Minnetrista. Minnesota is the 2nd most northernmost state in the Union, next to Alaska. The state’s highest point is Eagle Mountain which soars at 2,301 feet and is located at the shore of Lake Superior. The Mississippi River is also located in Minnesota and its source is Lake Itasca and it drains into the Gulf of Mexico, the river is a astounding 2,320 miles. Minnesota experiences many temperature extremes, with frigid winters and hot summers. The lowest temperature recorded ever in the state was a skin biting -60 °F in Tower on February 2, 1996, whereas the highest temperature was 114 °F in Moorhead on July 6, 1936. Meteorological events include rain, snow, blizzards, thunderstorms, hail, derechos, tornadoes, and high-velocity straight-line winds. Minnesota’s first state park was Itasca State Park and was established in 1891, and is the source of the Mississippi River. From less than 6,120 white settlers in 1850, Minnesota's official population grew to over 1.7 million by 1900. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of Minnesota was at least 5,611,179 on July 1, 2018. The gender makeup of the state was 49% Male and 50% Female, 24.2% of the population were under the age of 18; 9.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.3% were from 25 to 44; 27.1% were from 45 to 64; and 12.9% were 65 years of age or older.
