YOU SAID:
Civil War Battle Breakdown Objective: Through research and presentation to break down a major battle of the Civil War, becoming an “expert” on not only the battlefield tactics of the commanders involved, but also displaying an understanding of the significance of the chosen battle in the greater narrative of the war. Steps: Beginning last night, choose a major battle of the Civil War (use the major battles chart) Research the battle – you can use the sheet on the back of this to organize your research. Some websites for use: Civilwar.org/battlefields Soldiers and sailors database: http://www.nps.gov/civilwar/soldiers-and-sailors-database.htm Library of Virginia: http://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/guides/Civil-War/Battles.htm Library of Congress: http://www.loc.gov/rr/main/uscw_rec_links/external.html The Historic New Orleans Collection: http://www.hnoc.org/ajmeekexhibition/ From the Southern Perspective: http://www.sonofthesouth.net/ PBS Links to More Resources: http://www.pbs.org/civilwar/classroom/archival_resources.html Compile your research into PowerPoint (or similar presentation software) with a focus on maximizing the viewing experience. (i.e. do not simply list fact after fact; use multimedia, animated maps, etc.) Your slide show should include: A Title slide with your name, date and your chosen battle The set-up of the battle (Why were the Armies meeting where they did?) A breakdown of the battle (Think like a military commander – how did the side who “won” do it?) The significance of the battle in the overall scheme of the war – Why was this battle important? All multimedia included should be relevant to your chosen topic. (i.e. random pictures of the Civil War do not make sense or enhance your presentation) Though not necessary, first-hand accounts, letters from soldiers, etc. enhance and deepen the connection to the material and are encouraged. A bibliography with MLA-style citations (use www.easybib.com) You will have today (Thursday) in class and half of class tomorrow (Friday) to complete the work. In the second half of class tomorrow, we will “present” the work. This is considered a project for Unit 3 and will be graded according to following simple rubric, styled like the ELA Rubrics: Content: 1 2 3 4 Focus: 1 2 3 4 Organization: 1 2 3 4 Style: 1 2 3 4 Conventions: 1 2 3 4 Battlefield Research Battle: __________________________________ Date(s): __________________________________ Commanding Officers (Union): __________________________________ Commanding Officers (Confederate): __________________________________ Set-up of Battle (How did the Armies get here?) _________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Battlefield Breakdown (Think like a military historian) ____________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Outcome of the Battle _______________________________________________________________________ Battlefield Casualties (Union) _______________________________________ Battlefield Casualties (Confederates) _________________________________ Significance of the Battle _____________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Any other interesting people/stories from the battle? _____________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Sources: __________________________________________________________________________________
