Baking doubles as a form communication with my friends and family. I fulfill requests for desserts such as red velvet cake for a birthday party or cranberry bread as a Christmas dinner dessert. Talking isn’t the only way to convey a message. Humans have been socializing through food for millennia. Baking is my way of showing appreciation, perhaps not through sweet words but through sweet food. I pay more attention to detail than ever before. Through my flour-speckled lenses, I can see the similarities between science and baking. In both, there are measurements and rules. Follow them and I’ll be fine; deviate and my results may vary. If I’m familiar enough with what I’m doing, then by all means I’ll go ahead and experiment—a bit less flour here, a pinch more salt there. Though I learn by experimenting, I also run the chance of messing up. I’ve learned to read instructions all the way through, and only then will I pave my own path. This attentiveness and thoroughness has influenced my academics as well. I often find myself rereading instructions and pointing out important lines that my classmates may have missed. Understanding all the fine details beforehand minimizes the bumps in the learning process. Baking has introduced me to a new method of expression and sharpened my perception.
