Kanji are more like hieroglyphs rather than alphabetic letters - there are thousands of them and they each represent an idea rather than a sound. They have multiple contexts and pronunciations. Hiragana is the standard syllabary, used to mark inflections, verb endings, other grammatical words, and some words where the kanji has become obscure. Finally, katakana is the syllabary used for foreign words from outside of Japan (and China). Many of these are English words, but some are from other languages. For example, the Japanese word for "bread" ("pan" - パン) comes from the Portuguese pão. Just think of katakana as the Japanese equivalent of italics. Something that I find difficulty with is kanji, because there are so many of them, and they each have so many different contexts / pronunciations. However, I have little difficulty with the grammar because it is very similar to Korean, a language that I already know.
